Math in the Real World

My students need hands on math materials and learning centers that will allow them to actively engage in learning and see how it applies to their everyday lives.

My Students

Math is all around us and my students need your help experiencing how it applies to their everyday lives. Many of them have never planned a family vacation or purchased groceries using a budget and this project will allow those experiences and many others to come alive in our classroom.

All of my students strive each day to be the best students they can be.

We use manipulatives and stories to make math come alive, but they lack the personal experiences to know why learning math is important. Although we read stories and use manipulatives, I often hear "Why is this important?" Providing math experiences for my children through real world math learning centers will allow them to see the importance of math and how it applies to their lives now and in the future. Many of them do not go out to eat at restaurants or take trips around the world, but this project will allow them to work in small groups and complete a wide array of assignments that include shopping for groceries, planning a party, taking a family vacation and maintaining a bank registry. Students will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions to solve real world problems and will build their understanding of the many reasons why learning math is essential.

My Project

Funding this project will allow my students to gain an appreciation for math and the importance it plays in their lives as children and one day as adults. Each of my students will see math in the context of the real world and understand why it is essential for them to learn many of the concepts they struggle to grasp. Math will become something they enjoy rather than another subject that must be learned because they will find value in learning. This project will allow me as the classroom teacher to continue to meet the diverse learning needs of my students by tailoring instruction to meet their needs. My students enjoy playing an active role in their learning and this project will create experiences that are critical to their success.

Life without math is nonexistent and your donation will help my students understand how it connects to their daily lives.

Math is more than procedures and multiple choice tests and this project will allow my students to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to complete tasks that involve real world math.
