If my students had to identify someones blood type in the future, perhaps as an LVN, RN, phlembotomist, etc. chances are they would not know how. We need to apply genetics and blood typing to A&P and biology. The students here are anxious to be hands on learners, but are challenged when the proper supplies are not available. Most of the students who graduate from this school end up staying around the area and don't further their education. Because this is a rural country area, job availability is very very low. If these students get interested in science applications to everyday life now, they may have a greater chance at success through a trade. It is very important that I challenge these students to understand more about their health and environment. My Project: My students will not only know the importance of blood typing, but will understand how more red blood cells are produced. THey will be able to identify their blood types and if they are part of the much need donor population they may become active blood or bone marrow donors in the future. The students will learn about blood types, how they are inherited through genetics, and what genes are responsible for the ABO blood group and the Rh factor. I have high expectations that they will also develop an understanding of different diseases that affect the blood. Students will express interest in this lab because it is directly about them. What is their blood type? how could they have inherited genes to be this blood type? They will develop an understanding of why it is so important to get a perfect blood type match. And perhaps one day, by donating blood one of them will save a life. hide» My students need a blood typing kit, a mitotic cell division poster, informative DVDs, and microscope slides. details»
