My students need 2 beanbag chairs, a small CD player for quiet music, a poster and a "QUIET PLEASE!" sign to create an area to de-stress during the day.

My Students

Think back to your freshmen year in high school, now combine that with your freshmen year in college-that's what my students are experiencing. As part of an Early College, they are already taking college classes along with their regular high school classes and sometimes the stress is overwhelming.

These Early College students are ninth graders that are first generation college students.

They come from three different counties in the rural Appalachian mountains. Eighty-nine percent of them are on free and reduced lunch. Half are from single parent homes but all of them have a common dream-to get a college education and they are living that dream as part a nationwide initiative to combine their traditional high school classes with college classes to get an Associates degree along with their high school diploma in five years. Their classes weave in and out during the five years starting with introductory level college classes this year along with traditional freshmen classes and move into the more rigorous classes in subsequent years.

My Project

I have requested resources to set up an area for the kids to go when they are having "meltdowns". The CD player will provide calming music or nature sounds while the students can just chill out in the bean bags chairs. The posters will remind others it's a quiet area that's available when the stress is overwhelming. The area I have in mind has a skylight and is in a quiet corner that lends itself to a calming feeling. I will provide green tropical plants and perhaps some lavender scented air fresheners that will further create a calming atmosphere.

Our program operates at NO cost to the students so we use all our monies to provide them with educational necessities including a laptop, free field trips, school supplies if necessary so we have no extra monies for something like a "student de-stressing" area.

As the school counselor, I know the importance of a happy place for all of us to escape when we are overwhelmed and I want to give such a place to such hard working students who are trying to achieve a lofty dream.
