The Color of Tolerance

My students need 40 copies of "The Color of Water".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it's like to want? Have you ever been the victim of racial discrimination? James McBride answers these questions in his powerful memoir which talks to teens year after year.

My students come from a diverse community.

We are Latin Americans, African Americans, Cambodians, and Pacific Islanders. Our school population is close to 4,000! We celebrate diversity on our campus with many culture oriented clubs. We also have a Peace club on campus which promotes tolerance through learning about other cultures and practicing non-violent communication. Many students on campus enjoy sports and dance. We also support music and the arts.

My Project

The Color of Water is a powerful book which truly speaks to my student population. James McBride's experiences often parallel situations in their own lives. Through this memoir, my students can deal with their own emotions as they read how James and Ruth dealt with similar situations. This book brings laughter and tears.

This book not only teaches students about literature, but it also teaches lessons about life.

Having our own class set will ensure that this book continues to be part of my curriculum.
