My Students

If students hate reading, giving a book to them is as helpful as a giving water to a whale. Teenage males (especially reluctant readers) tend to be drawn to magazines for their quick reads and vivid pictures. If I could get their interest piqued through a short article, then who knows what is next!

My students are 6-8th grade males and females who are reading below grade level.

The targeted program that I teach helps students reach their appropriate reading levels and supplements reading strategies taught in their language arts classes. Because these students read mostly novels and short stories in their language arts classes, I would like to provide them an alternative to the reading they are used to. Grabbing student's attention through a short article could lead to a short story on that project and eventually build up their stamina to read an entire book. Many of my students have never done that before. I want to create a love of reading in my students that they can carry on with through their lives.

My Project

I would like individual subscriptions to Weekly Reader (Read) magazine. This text is valuable because it incorporates many types of literature and topics to engage the most unmotivated student. Students will be exposed to new ideas, genres and material in a creative and vivid way. I will be able to reach my students and conference with them using interesting text. This will give me a better chance to engage the students and truly reach them where they are as readers to help them grow.

This project is so important because I believe that all of my students have the ability to be good readers when presented the kind of text that interests them.

Your donation will make a difference in my student's lives because they will know that someone cares. This will help me show them that this world is bigger than them and doing good for others is part of our responsibility as global citizens.
