My students need atlases and globes to begin their high school Social Studies career learning about the world around them.

My Students

We want to go global. But we can't! We are missing one important element-student atlases and globes! A social studies room without a globe is like McDonald's without french fries; it just doesn't work!

Our school is located in a rural part of Eastern Kentucky.

The demographics is mostly farms with small towns dotted across the county. Our high school contains approximately 1000 students, with over half on free/reduced lunches. Overall, we have a great student body with those who want to excel, but sometimes lack the financial means to do so.

My Project

Just because we live and teach in a high poverty area, does not mean our students shouldn't have the same resources afforded to them as their big city counterparts. We are embarking on a new way to teach our incoming freshman in their social studies classes. This class will teach students about the economy, geography, and government of the United States and the world. Our students will learn in region units. In addition, classes will discover the cultural aspect of each country-such as, local foods, holidays, fashions, and animals. This allows our students to compete and keep up with the schools in our region, our state, and our country.

The impact is tremendous, our students are lacking on state testing in the area of geography.

Having the opportunity to own classroom sets of atlases and globes will allow our students to see a world from their seats that they may not get a chance to see in real time. Our students will be able to see the many countries that dot our world-and have the ability to understand alliances and wars by viewing who is a neighbor to whom.
