My Students

Thomas Jefferson said "I cannot live without books" and "Of all exercises, walking is the best". I plan to use Playaways with a "book club on foot" to combine this wisdom of Thomas Jefferson. Listening to literature while walking will challenge my students to listen more carefully.

My students are typical middle school students - dealing with all that the early teen years entails.

They are sometimes self absorbed, sometimes preoccupied with what others around them are doing and saying and many times not really paying attention to details or the really important stuff. Like many young people, they lead fairly sedentary lives as well.

My Project

The walking book club that will be introduced when the new school year starts will combine the elements of fitness and listening to literature. With today's rising obesity statistics among youth, it's important to promote physical activity. Middle school students many times don't pay attention to details in stories, or don't pay attention at all. Combining walking with listening to literature on Playaways will sharpen their listening skills. Because I plan to ask for plot summaries and things like character analysis, they will have to pay better attention to what they hear. This will carry over into their regular class work, where they should see improved grades and test scores.

What I hope to accomplish with this project is threefold: to get students moving for physical health, to develop a love of literature by combining it with something pleasurable, and to sharpen their listening skills.

All three of these will have a positive affect for their future whatever they decide to do.
