Math Connected

My students need a MacBook Pro computer, quad composition notebooks and security cables for 2 laptops.

My Students

Our classroom needs both a new computer and good old fashioned notebooks. I want to give my students access to the same technology as their more affluent peers, but I also want them to learn the value and necessity of maintaining accurate and thorough notebooks for their math classes.

The school in which I teach is a high-need inner city high school.

Many of the students are economically disadvantaged and quite frequently socially dislocated. But ours is a mission-driven school with the goal of preparing our students for college, and also educating them to be global citizens - people who accept responsibility for their role in society and who try to create positive change wherever they go. The majority of my students enter high school with below standard math skills. But I am convinced that each of them can have success in mathematics - it is my job to find the approach which engages each student. This means appealing to different learning styles and accommodating a range of learning needs, and it also means convincing children who have frequently met with failure to try one more time to master material that has challenged them in the past. It is always heartening to me to see a student who struggles willing to attempt another approach to math.

My Project

Many of my students do not have reliable or up-to-date computers and Internet available at home, so I want to make that technology available to them in the classroom. By purchasing this computer, we will be able to have a dedicated machine available for interactive geometry software, web-quests, and other online investigations. And by giving each student a notebook, we can make sure that everyone has the proper supplies and also work on note-taking skills (something they badly need practice in for future use in college). I teach geometry, a subject which is new to most of the students. Success in geometry is dependent on the mastery of the specific vocabulary and theorems, but also relies on the ability to visualize spatial relationships. The notebooks will help students with the written work, and the computer will give them the opportunity to visualize and manipulate geometric images for better understanding. These resources are high and low tech - and equally important.

The benefit of using a computer for visualization in geometry is immeasurable.

I have written proposals for notebooks for my students before, and can attest that they have had a significant and positive impact on classroom performance and mathematical understanding. There are no school resources for these purchases; your generosity as a donor will help my students become competitive as they seek to attend college and enter the real world. Thank you for considering a donation to this project.
