What's A Crayfish Like on the Inside?

My students need preserved crayfish along with a Crayfish Structure and Function Kit and 2 boxes of nitrile gloves.

My Students

It's what's on the inside that counts. For my students to understand how an organism is adapted to its environment, they must see as much of its internal anatomy as the outside, but we'd need to have the organisms first.

My school is in a low-income, rural area in New York's Catskill region.

My students are inquisitive and love to explore, but much of their lives have been spent in the county. They learn a lot in science classes by experiencing organisms or themes that don't seem like much in a land-locked county.

My Project

I would like to close out a year of Marine Biology with a dissection of crayfish. Students have heard of what arthropods are since middle school, but since comparative anatomy is no longer a requirement, they don't get to learn much about them. The resources I've requested will provide at least two years' worth of Marine Biology classes the opportunity to get hands-on study of crayfish anatomy.

By learning first about the adaptations and anatomy of arthropods, then getting to see one and explore its anatomy, students will learn a lot about an exemplar of the world's most numerous animals: arthropods.
