My Students

Our district, like so many others, is cutting millions from the budget for next year. The economy has hit our families hard and they are not able to contribute toward the purchase of our Weekly Readers. This project is to support the seven first grade classrooms at our school.

Our students are six and seven years old.

They come from middle to low economic families. My students have come from many different countries and backgrounds. Our elementary school is a K-5 school with high expectations and we are proud to have met AYP each year.

My Project

Weekly Readers are non-fiction text with topics that vary from holidays to safety to insects and more. Weekly Readers help us to teach our students new vocabulary, help with reading fluency and comprehension, improve critical thinking skills, help students learn to make inferences and predictions, and learn information from graphs, charts, text boxes, diagrams, illustrations, headings, and titles.

Weekly Readers have helped inspire students to learn.

Students get excited about having their own copy in which they can take notes about interesting facts. Students then get to take the magazine home and share what they've learned with their families.
