Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Engage us! Inspire us! Excite us about learning! I teach an energetic group of 2nd graders. My classroom is populated by a high number of English Language Learners and low-performing students. They need innovative methods to keep them not only learning, but EXCITED about it!

I feel lucky to teach 27 ambitious, hard-working 2nd graders at a high-poverty Colorado public school.

Due to budget cuts I will have up to 35 students next year. Effectively managing a classroom of this size is a challenge. However, the challenge is not quite as large when students are interested and engaged in what they are learning.

My Project

Last year, I wrote a grant and was fortunate to receive an interactive whiteboard for my classroom. This interactive whiteboard provides many opportunities for visual learning among my students, and allows us to access the internet to find information and conduct our own research investigations. I have recently learned about an awesome website called Brain Pop! This website includes educational video clips, interactive activities, and quizzes to enhance lessons. Brain Pop uses sound effects and kid-friendly characters to appeal to my 2nd graders. Also, the visual and auditory supports really help my ELL students. Unfortunately, this website requires a subscription. I signed up for a free-trial and was amazed by this incredible website! During the limited time we had access to Brain Pop Jr., my students' engagement skyrocketed every time I used Brain Pop to enhance a lesson. My students and I are so excited about the possibility of having a 1-year subscription to Brain Pop Jr.
