Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our public school district sits in a major urban area, but also shares a beautiful and fragile salt marsh, which is officially designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. My chemistry students are beginning an extended day environmental stewardship service learning project there.

This is a very diverse, low income and working class community.

We are "urban" in our student composition and in the challenges our students face, but we also are stewards of a coastal environmental treasure. Our community proudly shares a public beach, and an integrated public school system. Over 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 47% speak a first language other than English. My tenth grade chemistry students are involved in the music and social networking activities that characterize their generation. They see themselves as very sophisticated because of the social comfort they have learned with their diverse classmates. They have learned computer literacy skills, and want to use them to take part in the larger world. My students are interested in expanding their science knowledge and meeting their service obligation, by taking up the stewardship of our coastal environment and filming and posting the ecology of our marshes.

My Project

Scientists from a fine university have helped us assemble the web resources and programs to interface hand-held GPS tracking with environmental data, and superimpose the graphic images on maps from the Google Earth site. We can even show transect data of salinity or species diversity, by synchronizing the data collected with the satellite clock in the GPS receiver we have requested. The students are excited by the idea of filming their projects with the Flip cameras and tripods. The two Flip cameras are easy to learn, and will enable all students to shoot video of our marsh (and of each other studying it). We have a program available that will embed our video links on the Google Earth Map, as part of a regional place-based stewardship project.

I know we are breaking new ground here.

Young people need to be outside, working together, and anchoring their science learning in real places. It is by their direct involvement with the air, water, organisms, and earth that they will come to know and love it.
