My Students

I proudly teach at a wonderful alternative high school in Chicago. We serve students between the ages of 16-20 who have dropped out of school and have chosen to return. Many of our students balance continuing their schooling with parenthood, jobs, and other adult responsibilities.

Despite these obstacles, they have made a choice that many of their peers have not – they have chosen to remain in school.

They are some of the most incredible and resilient people you could ever hope to meet. They strive everyday to complete their high school educations and transition to trade school and college.

My Project

To best meet the academic and emotional needs of our students, our school has 90 minute block scheduling. While this is a great format for most of our students, for some it is too much sitting in too confined of a space. For students with attention deficit disorders, sitting this long is almost impossible. I thought that having alternative seating, where students do not have to remain totally still, could help certain students maintain focus much longer.

Our classrooms are small and crowded.

Sitting in them is often uncomfortable. Having a yoga ball chair would really make a difference in creating the type of environment where students want to be, and therefore, want learn.
