My Students

Starting from scratch in a new school is difficult. As we grow, we are adding new classes because of student interest, changing state standards and state curriculum. We are combining Honors English 10 with AP Government and choosing AP English novels that coincide with each branch of government.

AP Government will be the first AP course these kids experience in their high school careers.

These are high achieving, creme of the crop students who tend to get "left out" when it comes to budget cuts because it is assumed that they will "survive" anyway. Many buy their own books and spend hours combing used bookstores for their own copies since we cannot provide all of the novels we would like to teach. Sometimes they borrow from other schools, but that can be a logistical nightmare. These kids come from all income levels, but are willing to do what it takes to better themselves!

My Project

All the KIng's Men is on the AP Literature reading list which will help prepare them for AP English the following year after taking my class. Because we will study elections, spin, and the political process in AP Government, this book will tie in nicely with those topics.

When students can see the relevance of what they are doing in class and how it connects to the "real world", real learning takes place.

Because we do current events in English and in Government, All the King's Men will tie in that real world relevance they see in current events.
