This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
There is nothing like watching a child become a reader. Watching their faces light up and their confidence soar as they discover they can read! We currently have a set of about 100 books at the appropriate reading level, but the students are hungry for new material, more challenging material.
First grade is a magical year, filled with so much growth and discovery.
The first graders in my inner-city classroom are extremely motivated to learn to read and they fly through the materials currently available to them. They read during their free choice time in class and they ask to take the books home to read too. Many of the students come from homes where the number of books available is limited and the number of books at their reading level is almost nonexistent. By mid-year, many of the students had already taken home the majority of the books we currently have and were begging for new ones.
My Project
The best way to increase a student's ability to read is to increase the amount of time they spend reading. Library books provide a great opportunity for parents to read to their children each week, but very few books from the library are at the reading level of a first grader. The books that I am requesting will have a huge impact on the lives of my students. They will have so many more titles to choose from during independent reading time and choice is a huge motivating factor. There will also be a wider variety of titles for them to take home and practice reading at their level.
I strongly believe that creating a lifelong reader involves giving a student many opportunities to be successful at reading.
Donating to help fund this project will be instrumental in creating classrooms full of lifelong readers for years to come.
