Reading can open gateways to knowledge, can lower the drawbridge to the imagination, and can serve as inspiration in our lives.

I remember fondly the first chapter books I read.

I remember reading Charlotte's Web in Mrs. Stewart's third grade class, and checking out Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary books from the library. I would like to create those same fond memories for my students. I am the teacher to 31 energetic and eager third graders. Though most of them like reading, many are scared to start reading chapter books. Engaging literature will help. My students attend a small school in Southern California. Our school has many English Learners and socio-economically disadvantaged students. Some have very little access to literature at home, and many have parents who are unable to read with them in English.

My Project

I am requesting several chapter books to create a classroom library. I have requested several copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as many of my students have expressed a strong desire to read that book. In fact, our school library currently has a waiting list about 20 students long for that book. I have also requested copies of many of my third grade favorites. These books will help my students to develop their independent reading skills. By practicing reading books at their level, they will become better readers. I'm also hoping that by having age appropriate chapter books, they will discover that chapter books are not so scary after all.

It is my dream that all of my students become independent readers and develop a lifelong love of learning and reading.

As they begin reading more and more, books can open a world of knowledge to my students. Thank you for your consideration in funding this project.
