My Students

The students of this generation are faced with more unhealthy food choices than ever before! They need more positive experiences and practice with making good choices and our schools are seriously lacking resources for this goal.

I have 23 fourth graders who love learning about their Pacific Northwest culture, heritage, and history.

They are part of a diverse public school community with many different languages represented and over half qualifying for free lunch. Our school is filled to the brim with bright, happy learners (over 550 of them!) who start their day each morning with our Peace Pledge: “I will act in such a way that I will be proud of myself, and others will be proud of me too. I came to school to learn, and I will learn. I will have a great day.” My students work hard each day to accomplish this goal, and I do my best to provide them with the resources they need to do it.

My Project

With games, resources, and books about healthy food choices, my classroom will be able to host opportunities for students to think about the food choices that they make for themselves every day. These opportunities will be able to include reading and discussion about the food choices available to people living in the United States. They will also include lessons on the “Five Food Groups” so that students can begin to understand how one goes about choosing the parts of their meal and how foods work together for the right, healthy balance our bodies need. I also look forward to being able to use games and exercises as a tool for promoting positive, fun, experiences that are centered around food choices so that students can reflect on the task in a positive light. As students get older and begin contributing to the food choices their families make at home, the classroom experiences that these resources helped to provide will serve as a foundation for making the healthiest choices possible

We need more children of this generation to have the skills needed to be able to make healthy choices in the foods they eat. This project will make the kind of impact on my students’ lives so that, as they get older, their learning about nutrition and health has a good foundation.
