My Students

Our books are being torn apart by little fingers who do not know how to be kind to their pages! We need help to learn how to treat our books kindly and how to bring the stories in them to life!

I teach a class of 18 three-year-olds who are identified "at-risk" by socio-economic factors or potential developmental delay.

Some have identified special needs and are mainstreamed into my regular education preschool classroom. Many of my students do not have books at home, and most of them do not visit the public library regularly to borrow books. They do not know how to hold books correctly, how to turn pages, or how to enjoy illustrations. These are gloriously curious little guys and girls who need to hear good quality children's literature many times a day, and they need the opportunity to explore it independently as well. We need a variety of books available to them that cover a range of genres, genders, ages, abilities, and cultures. In addition to the stories in the books I have requested, I am asking for storytelling kits to help students enrich and enhance their experiences. These kits will give students tangible tools to cue their language skills as they retell stories.

My Project

These books will help our new students learn the importance of holding books carefully and caring for them correctly. They will be used to teach students that they should not tear pages, write in books, or bend covers. They will help us encourage our students to develop a love of reading as they learn to respect their reading materials. The story telling kits will help broaden and expand language and imagination as their minds soar with characters, plots, settings, and images of wonder.

Please consider helping my little guys and girls by giving them the tools they need to set the foundation for literary success.

If I give them the best possible circumstances under which to learn that reading is fun, I believe they will become avid readers and life-long learners!
