My Students

Our greenhouse is relatively small and cramped for space. Our students in the Environmental/Plant Botany course (as well as our Science Club) are starting plants from seed. We need more shelving to accommodate the seed trays and then the plants once the students transplant them.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, but we are a high poverty (free/reduced lunch), small city public school district in New York.

The students enrolled in the Plant Botany course are a diverse group and work very well together. It is a great experience to watch such a heterogeneous group work on their projects. The hands-on opportunities that the greenhouse provides are beneficial for all of the students involved. The Science Club is also a varied group of student from many different backgrounds. It is an "open" club, so students are welcome to do whichever activities interest them... and the plants are always popular!

My Project

Our students will be more inclined to try fruits/vegetables from the plants they have grown and hopefully incorporate them into a healthier lifestyle. They will learn how to grow plants from seed and then care for them once they take them home. To accomplish this, we need more shelving to grow all of the plants from seed and to have space once they are transplanted. Our space is very limited now and managing so many plants becomes quite difficult. Having the open wire shelving will permit us to use the space we do have more efficiently while providing the best growing environment for the plants while maintaining air flow, light to reach them and drainage.

With childhood obesity on the rise, and our student population is no exception, we are trying to encourage the students to make wise decisions about what they put on their plate.

Having the personal satisfaction of growing their own plants and then eating the food produced will hopefully encourage them to start their own home gardens. We can accomplish this with additional shelving to start our seeds on and move the transplants to. Thank you for your help in realizing the fruits of our labor.
