Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is no substitute for real-world, hands-on experience when learning. Imagine learning cooking without ever stepping foot in a kitchen. This is similar to what we ask our biology students to do when we have them learn about the body without ever looking inside of one.

My students are underclassmen at a suburban lower-middle-class high school.

They are a bright, resourceful, and interested group of people concerned about their education and critically engaged in topics that affect us and the rest of the world. Many of my students are interested in going into the medical field in one way or another, and most are interested in learning about animals. Their interests peak when they have a chance to investigate science by doing hands-on projects like dissections.

My Project

These dissections will allow students to become inspired to be our future doctors, nurses, and veterinarians. The "surgeons" of the group will gain confidence and help others through the lab. Students will practice being patient and careful as they dissect various body parts in order to study them carefully. Students will remember about the animals they dissected and use these vivid memories to understand how body structure is so important to function. The material that they need to know will stay with them for a lifetime because of the enjoyable experience they had in doing these dissections.

Donations to this project will give about 100 students hands-on experience dissecting various animals and working together in groups.

Students will learn the material far beyond what they would by textbook reading. As they work together and take turns dissecting the various organisms, they will gain an appreciation for how living things work and practice following detailed instructions at the same time. They will also have a chance to be creative and think critically.
