My Students

Which state claims the first Thanksgiving? Massachusetts may come to mind, but 56 years before they celebrated, Pedro Menedez, a Spanish explorer, arrived on the coast of Florida and founded the first North American city, St. Augustine and celebrated the first Thanksgiving.

My students come from a diverse background.

Many are from homes that are single parent or multi-generations. They are a wonderful class and eager to learn about our state's history, always asking questions. Our school is a Title 1 school which means that at least 75% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. With this in mind, and the economic hardships, these students are unable to travel outside of their neighborhood. They are unable to visit museums, theaters, or other events in which they may learn about other cultures that influenced our present culture. These students are from disadvantaged homes and I will do everything in my power to get them excited about our state's rich history.

My Project

Year after year, in November, students around the country learn about the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and the first Thanksgiving. According to the author of America's Real First Thanksgiving," to thank God for a safe journey and a new land, the explorer "provided a Thanksgiving feast for the Spanish, with the Timucua as guests." On September 8, 1565, the Spanish and the native Timucua celebrated with a feast of Thanksgiving. The Spanish most likely offered Cocido, a rich stew made with pork, and the Timucua may have brought wild turkey, venison, or even alligator, along with corn, beans, and squash. Topics include a summary of the world in 1565, a discussion of uncharted lands, Spain in the 1560s, Florida in the 1560s, a description of the Timucuan way of life, the founding of St. Augustine, events on the day of Thanksgiving, and St. Augustine today. Many comprehension skill will be utilized with this lesson. A culminating activity would be to make our own Cocido that is provided in the book.

I have been searching for tradebooks to integrate with reading that depict our state's history.

When I located this book, I was thrilled because it not only provided our state's history, but also a different perspective on Thanksgiving. This book will provide students a more age appropriate study on Thanksgiving, as well as , visual images of our state's culture, landscape, etc in the 1500s. One of my objectives is to help create a proud, well-informed, citizen of our beautiful state.
