My Students

Howard Gardner, prominent Harvard psychologist, said, "For me, the purpose of education is to enhance understanding." My students need access to a variety of scientific resources that would bring the world of science to them in a concise and relevant format.

Our students are first admitted to the children hospital and subsequently start receiving their education in our district.

Many are diagnosed with cancer, cerebral palsy, encephalitis, among other illnesses. Although, our students are classified as special needs, we strive to provide them with a rigorous academic program. Students are grouped in inclusion classes and teachers differentiate the instruction to meet the goals of every student. We believe that all students regardless of their disability, can be successful given the necessary resources.

My Project

Learning in science require students to apply reading and writing strategies to construct meaning. For many of my students reading and comprehending science textbooks present a challenge. The new vocabulary, complex charts, and detailed oriented descriptions, in addition to lack of prior knowledge and relevance to students' lives combine to make the text difficult to understand. My students need a variety of reading resources that bring the world of science to them in a concise manner. Current Health and Current Science Magazines will allow them to use reading and writing strategies to construct and share meaning while focusing on scientific content.

Your donation will allow my students to have access to a variety scientific information such as web archives, nonfiction articles, photographs, Sci-Tri Game, and content rich mini-web site.

Please help me inspire my students and help them succeed as lifelong learners.
