Groovy, Grasping, & Genuine

My students need 65 copies of "We Beat The Street" for each of them to read in the first semester as their nonfiction assignment.

My Students

Gripping, courageous and inspiring might not be words that describe the nonfiction classics set 40 years before the birth of my students. My students need to be able to see the benefits of nonfiction with stories set in their lifetimes.

My students will be 9th graders at an inner city school.

These students will not only just be starting high school, but will be dealing with tremendous problems in their neighborhoods (including gangs, drugs, and violence). School is probably not high on their priority list, so they need as many relevant and inspiring projects and literature they can get.

My Project

The book I chose is about three men who grew up in a similar environment as my students. These men banded together and through friendship and determination, they got out of projects. I chose this book because it is inspirational and relevant to my students. My students should learn the opportunities that are accessible to them, no matter what living conditions from which they come. Also, it will show them the importance and treasures that nonfiction holds.

The classes these books are intended for are classes of lower readers.

This book might be the first book they read completely. Not only that, this book might inspire and change their lives forever. This book might inspire a future doctor not to give up.
