My Students

The most common issue facing freshmen is the transition from surrounding middle schools to high school. The majority of my students do not know the person next to them on the first day of school. Reading and English class are usually the last thing they want to think about.

I teach in a small town in coastal Maine.

We are a Title I school with many students qualifying for free-reduced lunch. My students come from eight sending schools and are often faced with the challenge of learning to navigate a new school and the pressures of making friends. My students are currently reading Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak, a novel about a young girl's traumatic transition to high school. This book addresses social issues for students around bullying and sexual harassment. This book is very popular with my students. Unfortunately, I do not have a class set of books that addresses my male students' transition to high school. The goal of my project is to address the male student's experience in transitioning to high school through Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

My Project

We need 80 copies of Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian has been a popular book for independent reading—I can't keep it on my bookshelves very long! This book deals with a young Native American teenager's transition to a high school off the reservation. It addresses what it's like to be different in a new school (something that many of my students can relate to), the pressures of trying to fit in, and issues of tolerance. I'm requesting a full classroom set of this book to be read by both male and female students. I am confident and excited that this book will not only be a vehicle for reading/literacy instruction, but that it will be enjoyable and easy to relate to for my students.

I am confident and excited that this book will not only be a vehicle for reading and literacy instruction, but that it will be enjoyable and easy to relate to for my students.

It is my hope that by providing students with literature that is both educational and fun, that my students will be more inclined to pick up books to read outside of school.
