My Students

Our classroom library needs more picture books. If a picture is worth a thousand words then a picture book is worth a million words! In fact it would be hard to place a value on what picture books mean to students and teachers.

My school is located in a coastal community in South Carolina.

My students come from mostly middle income families with 2 working parents. About one fourth of my students are from single parent homes. We have 3 military bases in our town so about 35% of our students are from military families. My students are involved in many after school activities which can sometimes leave little time for reading. In the classroom they love to read and I spend a lot of time helping them to select books based on their needs and interests. By participating in the SC Picture Book Award program my students will be exposed to 20 quality picture books and as an added bonus they will have the opportunity to vote on the ones they like the most.

My Project

Every year the South Carolina Association of School Librarians holds its annual Book Award Program. The South Carolina book award program began in 1976 with the participation of sixteen schools. Currently there are approximately three hundred schools and more than 30,000 students participating in this program. Awards are given in four categories: Picture Book, Children's Book, Junior Book and Young Adult. We are requesting one set of the 2010-2011 South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees. Not only will these books be read for pleasure, but students will also be learning about illustration styles, text structures and new vocabulary. This will help the students to become better writers. These pictures books will help students to develop story sense as well as expose them to different authors. Learning new technology will also be possible through the project. The SCASL provides podcasts with booktalks on each of the books. We will watch these podcasts and through this technology students will learn how to give booktalks.

My students will be impacted by this project in many ways.

Hopefully it will inspire them to continue to read quality literature while helping them become better writers. They will be learning new technology with the booktalks as well participating in the voting of their favorite book in the South Carolina Picture Book Award Program. This will be a worthwhile experience for all my students.
