My students need a computer projector, which will be used primarily during Science, Social Studies, and Art History.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm going to be up front here - my students face more challenges than you and I ever will. Sometimes, I imagine how unfair their lives are, how difficult their futures will be, and how I could possibly give them hope. But it is my students' eagerness to learn that fuels my ability to teach.

My students attend a "Career Development" school.

They are classified as "Mentally Retarded." Basically, they are High School students with the "academic abilities" of a third grader. Combined with this, they also live in the projects of the Bronx (if even, some of are in shelters). I want to illustrate something. Compare a severely autistic child to a student in my class. The former is not expected to be a fully functioning member of the work force. My student is. My student looks like any other student. For the most part, they speak like one too. No one outside our school knows their disability. After graduating, they must fend for themselves in a very real world. With that said, it is my job to provide them with the best education possible to ensure their survival. With this product, I can illustrate my lessons more clearly and make my class even more interactive, utilizing an "oral tradition" kind of learning environment (since they lack proper reading skills).

My Project

Here is what we need: A computer projector. It's one simple, expensive object that will improve the quality of my lessons significantly. Here are examples of how I plan to use it: Science - Show real pictures of human vs. plant cells rather than the generic coloring book version in a textbook. Social Studies - Compare Aztec civilization development to European ones during the same century. Art History - Show samples of art in a scale they can all see and critique at the same time. I can also download short Youtube clips (with Firefox Downloadhelper) related to my lessons straight into my laptop and play them during relevant lessons. You have no idea how many useful science clips are on that site that I can only show with little effectiveness on my laptop screen. Or maybe you do, but my point still stands. Another example of why this product is so useful is that I can easily make a "map" by showing a picture of a map of the world. A map scroll that you pull down can already cost $300.

I had a Film Production Bachelor's before I got my Master's in Education.

I can present a very great lesson with visuals. Back when I taught my students about the Holocaust, I had to borrow the tiny school TV (scheduled use), browse a DVD, find the clip I want, and then show it. With a projector, I can pre-fashion the clips I want and not waste any time. I also already have a pull-down blank screen ($100+) that came with my classroom! (It's useless right now since I do not have a projector).
