Learning to Read for Visual Learners

My students need over 300 pocket chart word cards with images embedded into each word in order to build a rich sight word vocabulary for reading and writing.

My Students

Learning to read and write are not easy tasks! This is especially true when traditional methods of teaching fail to meet the needs of children with particular learning styles.

My young kindergarten and first graders are a unique group of learners who are eager to read and write!

I teach them about 5 new "word wall words" (high frequency sight words) each week. We use a variety of strategies for learning new words, such as clapping, chanting, dancing, etc. However, when it comes time to read or write these words, I realize that they did not actual learn them. I am thrilled when they try to find words on the word wall in an effort to spell them correctly in their writing, but they often ask me to show them exactly where the words are located. This tells me that the word wall is not working as effectively as it could.

My Project

While searching for a solution, I discovered these "Snapwords" cards. They are just what I was looking for! The words are illustrated to reflect their meanings, which will certainly make them more meaningful and useful for the children. These cards will be instrumental for teaching sight word recognition to a wide variety of learners, including visual learners, children labeled with ADD or ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or right brained learners. According to the website, "the images embedded into each word ensure that children gain a rich sight word vocabulary as easily as a camera snapping a picture and storing it in memory."

These word cards with visual clues will help my students learn to recognize, read, and write many high frequency words.

I will use them for teaching and then they will be displayed for the children to refer to throughout the year. Students will feel confident in their abilities, which will allow them to flourish as readers and writers! Thank you so much for investing in our students' education!
