My Students

Imagine only watching people use computers and the internet. This sums up my children's experience: they have only *watched* people use computers on the countless television shows they see.

My students are a lively inquisitive group of first graders at an urban charter school in IL.

They are mostly African American, and mostly from an under-served and under-resourced neighborhood. Right now my students are caught in the technology gap- young children of color who do not have access to home computers or the internet. As a teacher who believes in providing my children the highest quality education, regardless of their background, I no longer want to settle for my children missing out on technology experiences while children from higher-income homes and higher-income districts deepen their learning about technology and experience the myriad of learning opportunities computers and the internet enable.

My Project

My goal is to establish a "computer station" in our room which would be in constant use by a small group of students through out the day. For example, when we work on reading, students who need remedial reading work will do one of a suite of educational software focusing on phonics, sight words, and easy readers. Students who need extra challenges in reading might visit a favorite author's website or create a multimedia book report. During Writing Workshop, a group of children will be able to "publish their stories" by typing up their stories and publishing them online as well as printing them for the class. Science, Social Studies, and Math are all other areas where children would work on skills via software, do internet research to explore a particular subject, and complete subject-related projects involving digital media and writing.

Your donation will enable my students to stretch their learning in every subject area as well as close the technology gap.

My students will learn how to run basic programs, do an internet search, take care of a computer, use email, type... all the things their middle class peers are learning in the primary grades! My children have so much potential; let's empower them with the high quality technology they need to become full citizens of the 21st century.
