My Students

Students in a self contained special education program learn a curriculum based largely on daily living skills. Students may read sight words but cannot transfer the information into the community. It is beneficial for students to see photographs of words as they actually appear in the community.

Our students function within a self-contained classroom.

They range in age from twelve to twenty two and possess a variety of special needs. With over 50% of our students below the poverty line, the contribution their parents can provide is severely limited. Unfortunately, our students fail in school or in life because of their life’s social circumstances, living in a rural setting, and limited physical and intellectual capacity. These are compounding effects and the likelihood for failure increases significantly. Schools can have a powerful impact on the academic achievement and success of all children by viewing them as at-promise and preparing them to reach their full potential. A good education is often the only means of breaking the cycle of poverty for disadvantaged children. We need to place an emphasis on sparking that desire to learn by not only helping to restore the child’s self-image but also encouraging students to see the rewards of school.

My Project

Through the use of a digital camera and color printer we are able to help our students function within their community. Photos taken are used in class to strengthen oral language, vocabulary, and reading skills. The photos will be used in numerous ways. These include: as supplements to daily individual readings; as attachments to the language master cards; on bulletin boards designed to help students match up words; on an electronic matching board that lights up when photo words are matched correctly; and in several games. The games included Concentration, Bingo, "Photo Caution," in which photos of "danger" words are used as a deck, and "Where is it?" which is a guessing game in which students try to identify where word photos were taken. Students will learn how to take their own pictures. Students will use photography for a foundation for community-based projects. Being able to take pictures gives the students age-appropriate, functional skills that they can be proud of.

Possession of a digital camera and color printer would provide immeasurable benefits to the education and advancement of our students.

The level of independence and ability to function appropriately within our community will develop in each student. They will read signs, billboards, and other attractions, and, if appropriate, perform the correct function. The social impact and the development of each student's self-image will be magnified immensely as they learn to take pictures independently.
