Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is about 3/4 non-English speaking and over 90% of the student body qualifies for free lunch. We are also a Title 1 school. These students are eager to learn how to read.

My students love to hear books read aloud to them, love to read their own books in guided reading, but most importantly love to hear books on tapes and Cd's.

This year I was not able to get a listening station from our media center. We have a limited number and you get one on a first come basis. A lot of teachers did not turn in the listening station at the end of the year. So we had to do without this year. These students see themselves as real readers and writers just like the authors they read and with listening station, these students will become more successful readers and writers!"

My Project

The students in my class will be able to listen to books on tapes or Cd's during their 1ndependent center time. Fluency is not a simple matter of speed, but has many dimensions. Nothing destroys meaning of a text, more than a reader who is struggling with fluency. One way to support these readers is by allowing them an opportunity to listen to books on tapes and Cd's so that they can hear what it sounds like when readers pause at appropriate points in text, phrase words that go together, reads with a rhythm, stresses words to indicate his interpretation of the text, moves along at appropriate pace and integrates all these dimensions so that the reader/listener can understand the text and think beyond the text.

With the current economic crisis and budget cuts that school systems are dealing with, little money is available to purchase new items that are needed to ensure successful implementation which results in increased student achievement.
