My Students

Listening to stories at bedtime is a fond memory of children. Many of the students in my clasroom have not had this experience. Consequently, vocabulary development, story comprehension, and the pleasure of enjoying a good story is foreign to them. A listening station in my classroom will help close this gap.

Presently there are 23 children enrolled in my classroom.

Our school is a Reading First School which has high poverty, low parent support, many single parent families, several fathers in jail, and young mothers in abusive relationships. The time my students have in our classroom is the best time of their day. I believe children must be active participants in their learning. A variety of manipulatives, materials and activities are provided in a station atmosphere so children can meet their individual interests and developmental needs in this supportive, motivating and positive learning environment. The students are learning to become independent thinkers and enjoy the positive atmosphere of making choices and also having small group time with their teacher. Empowering children is what it is all about here.

My Project

A listening station would certainly be a wonderful addition to this classroom. I have been saving many stories on tape with books, however we do not have the money to purchase a cd/cassette player. I also have the equipment so that 4 children might listen to a story and complete follow up activities however, without a player, this auditory piece of literature is missing. The watercolors requested will be a motivating tool in follow up projects to the two listening libraries also requested.

A happy place to learn in a positive environment full of music and literature and developmentally appropriate activities is what I work to provide for my students.

Implementing an activities based curriculum which provides an equitable learning environment for all learners is the goal. With your help, this program will be a positive motivator for the diverse students in this classroom and this goal will become a reality.
