Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the thrill and excitement of participating in your first science experiment? Science has a way of both captivating and perplexing us at the same time. With this project it is my hope that my students will experience much more of the former than the latter.

First of all, my girls absolutely love to participate in scientific experiments and learn new things, especially when it comes to life sciences.

Girls? Yes, all girls. I have the privilege of teaching at an all girl’s charter/nonprofit academy in the great state of Texas. Our population is made up of nearly all minority students. 80% of our students qualify for the free lunch program. Our goal at this academy is to prepare young women to be self-respecting independent thinkers with the academic, character, and social skills necessary to thrive in, and graduate from the four year college of their choice as well as make meaningful contributions to their community and the world. Attending a school like this simply would not be possible for our girls if it were not a charter/non-profit school. We are very grateful to our founders for their vision, as well as to those who support our school.

My Project

Right now I am asking you to partner with me to obtain notebooks, the flagship supplies needed for my planned curriculum. It is my goal to implement the use of science notebooks. Science notebooks can be used to help students develop, practice, and refine their science understanding, while also enhancing reading, writing, mathematics and communications. This will be a dedicated notebook strictly for the purposes of studying science through specific methods note-taking and illustrations. Interactive notebooks use both the right and left brain hemispheres which will help students to sort, categorize, remember and creatively interact with the new knowledge they will be gaining in science. Think of it as a science diary. It is learning tools such as the science notebook that are able to effectively assist a broad spectrum of students who have different methods of learning new information. This will be a fun, multifaceted learning experience.

It would mean so much to my students to have the opportunity to do this project.

There is no need to bombard you with statistics about women and science, or about “disadvantaged” communities and science. However, it is my hope that as you have taken the time to read over this information that you too will realize how much promoting and improving the learning of science, will build self esteem and confidence in my students' work and facilitate teaching and learning through hands-on experiences.
