My Students

Have you ever tried to prepare a meal using a oven/stove that does not heat accurately, or where the front half of the oven gets hotter than the temperature set and the back half is much colder than the temperature set. This is the challenge that we face every time we cook in the Autistic Classroom.

The students in this classroom are between he ages of 14 and 21.

All of the students in the Autistic Classroom enjoy learning to prepare meals so that they can live as independently as possible some day. The school is located in a very high needs area. Once a week the students get the opportunity to prepare a meal, and our goal is for them to do this as independently as possible. Many of the students in the classroom are non-verbal and non-readers. It is very difficult for them to use the classroom oven because is does not work well. It is very old and does not heat accurately, which causes the students to have difficulty when trying to prepare their weekly meals.

My Project

With your very generous donation the students in my classroom will get the opportunity to become more independent in their lives. My student be able to follow recipes and directions for different foods and know that the oven will work the way that it is supposed to. I try very hard to give the students in my class as much independence as possible, but is it very difficult to do this when cooking with a unreliable oven/stove.

Your donation to this project will have such an impact on the students in my classroom.

Every time they use the oven they get frustrated. This will give me the opportunity to teach them to cook for themselves so that they can become more independent in the future.
