My Students

Can you imaging be so overwhelmed by an everyday noise that you plug our ears and scream? I have 3 autistic students who cannot successful be apart of the community or be trained for an appropriate job placement/ living skills because of sensitivity to noises/frequencies.

I teach an autistic class in an urban public school.

My students love to swim and work on computers. We go on community trips to help them learn how to interact and work appropriately in the community. I teach them academics as well as daily living skills and job training.

My Project

Recently we had an opportunity to go to the circus. Half of my class could not go because the noise would over stimulate them. Loud noises or certain frequencies can cause my students to act out aggressively toward themselves or others. Their anxiety can be controlled by noise canceling headphones. I have seen other autistic students who have similar sensory issues find success with these headphones.

The diagnosis of children with autism have increased drastically.

In order to meet the needs of autistic students we need more resources and specialized technology. Public school district's budgets all over the country are being cut. In order to meet the specialized needs of my students I need to find donors who will give my students tools to be successful in their community and will continue their growth. My classroom will not be granted these specialized items through our school's budget
