It Starts with a Single Step

My students need 70 pedometers to count and log steps taken each day to reach fitness goals.

My Students

Wearing a pedometer and counting steps isn't going to help the childhood obesity problem, but is a step in the right direction. Wearing a pedometer, a child looks forward seeing how many steps they have taken in a day and usually increases the amount of walking they do - increasing physical activity.

The students that I will be working with are the "gifted students" of the district, grades 2nd - 8th.

They are hard working students focusing on getting good grades, reading good books, and not usually the athletes of the district; so the amount of time they spend on physical activity is limited. The majority of the students in our district are on free or reduced lunch so I don't see the parents spending the money on purchasing a pedometer for them. These students are eager to learn and pleasant to be around.

My Project

Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" program, our district is holding a Healthy Mind, Healthy Body...Let's Move IT, Move IT!! day for the gifted students. I have been asked to speak with our "gifted students" about the importance of exercise and physical activity. Having worked with many of these students in physical education class, their interest in sport related activities isn't that great, however, learning about the human body, formulas and numbers is something most of the students enjoy. These are the future doctors, chemists, lawyers, etc.. and they need to learn the importance of keeping active even if it is in the simplest form as in walking. If the students strive to walk the recommended number of steps per day, by wearing the pedometer, this in turn can only assist the cardiovascular system and possibly assist in some amount of weight loss. I have often heard it said that a "sound body equals a sound mind", this is what I hope to pass onto these students.

In supporting this project, you will give the students a number of things.

One, a pedometer for them to monitor and calculate the number of steps taken each day. Two, knowing that there our people in the world willing to help them and believe they are important. Three, knowing that walking is a lifelong activity you can do regardless of age, race, gender or size. Finally four, allowing the students to set goals for themselves to dream, to reach and to achieve.
