My Students

Summer Bridge is a program that provides a smooth transition from middle to high school. Ninth grade is a critical time for our youth. Research has shown that students who perform poorly or have been retained in the ninth grade are most likely to drop out of school.

Our student population consist of 38% white, 54% black, and 8% other.

Approximately 50% of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our school received a state grade of F last year. In an effort to raise the grade, economically disadvantaged students and students struggling academically will be personally contacted and informed about the Summer Bridge Program. Guidance counselors will visit the feeder schools and encourage students to attend Summer Bridge.

My Project

My students need cameras for activities designed to increase student involvement during our Summer Bridge Program for rising 9th graders. The cameras will be used by student groups to take pictures at various location of the school. These pictures will be used to make posters featuring the students and what they are bringing to school. An example is a poster with the student's picture with a slogan like "I'm bringing my A Game to the FCAT" promoting academic success. Slogans will be generated by the students. These posters will be laminated and displayed around the school. Also, each rising 9th grade student will have their picture taken in a cap and gown. Our goal is to change the culture of the school to one that inspires students to "do the right thing" and take ownership of their learning.

If the school and community can provide early intervention to help students be successful their first year in high school, the chances that they will experience continued success in high school and post secondary endeavors are high.

With your help, we will have a significant impact on our students and their ability to meet all state and district requirements for graduations and be successful in post-secondary pursuits.
