Hands-On Science with Earthquake Centers!

My students need science books and materials to create the hands-on learning centers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science used to be about discovery and inquiry. It has been reduced to reading and learning out of a textbook and a workbook. It's tragic. My students need to be engaged and active in their learning experiences. They need to learn by doing in order to galvanize the objectives that I have assigned.

They're a social group of 6th graders that enjoy working on projects and with each other in their collaborative groups.

They prefer to stand rather than to sit and love to do their schoolwork outside on a sunny day. They're quite active, curious, and fearless. Sometimes, they are bored with school and they look to me in order to make learning more meaningful and exciting. I do my best to provide them with active learning experiences. They do reflect upon their school lives and can often be found presenting reports orally to the class or just sharing a journal writing assignment with everyone. Soon, they will be in groups singing a "preposition song" to the class. They will be right at home in their moment of fame in front of the class. Great group, fun group, challenging bunch of 6th graders.

My Project

I'm a big fan of books, especially Science textbooks. However, my students expect more of me. The materials that I have requested will help me create student centers where they can meet in "science circles" and interact with the different models and learning objects. This group is used to working together and collecting data as they recently engaged in a Square of Life data collection activity this past Earth Day. The models and the hands-on element that this donation will bring to the table will be greatly appreciated by this bunch of students that work so hard on their textbook assignments. These materials will be our chance to make Science and interactive activity that is more than just reading a chapter out of a textbook and then answering some questions in a workbook or on a worksheet. We are hoping to qualify for the Chevron Teacher Grant and have this project fully funded!

Make learning matter.

Make students and their time matter. This material will enhance and enliven Science instruction in my classroom, where the future's scientists and space travelers are seated (and expecting me to do something profound).
