My Students

Every kid needs a chance to tell their story. For some, putting a pen to paper is easy, but for others it's a challenge. Recently one of my students with disabilities said, "Ms. E, I have so many screenplays and novels and ideas in my head-- I just can't get them out. I wish we had film class!"

I told him that we could form an after school film club if there was sufficient interest.

Within the day, several other students were enthusiastically on board for the idea. Film making would be a natural fit for our students. They are creative, clever, funny, observant, critical, and opinionated! They have a lot to say that the world needs to hear. In particular, we have a very large population of students with disabilities who would flourish using this medium of expression.

My Project

In our day in age, we don't need tons of complicated equipment to make a film-- just a computer and a few cameras. With these resources, we can make amazing films. Meanwhile, the students will reinforce reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, practice teamwork and cooperation, and experience the joy and confidence that comes from artistic expression. Plus, they will have lots of fun!

Film is a medium in which a child who is autistic, a child with a processing disorder, and a child without disabilities can work together to create something incredible. Our students have so much to say, and their ideas are worth sharing!
