My Students

Imagine having never read a book before and suddenly being expected to read the encyclopedia or War and Peace from cover to cover, independently. As disinterested learners, my students feel this way when presented with typical grade-level literature.

I teach 7-12 grade English at an alternative school for behaviorally challenged students in a very rural community.

Because of consistent problems with behavior, most of my students struggle academically as well. This was my school's first year to be open, and because of budget concerns facing the entire country, this year has been an interesting learning experience. We opened with only the essentials; finding a way to reach students who struggle to learn due to behavior concerns is a struggle on its own, and adding a lack of resources to this struggle punishes the students academically. Removing access to quality education is not a fair punishment; I want to do all that I can to be sure this does not happen.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of two novels that meet the lower reading levels of most of my students while still being interesting for their grade levels. My goal is to create an interest in reading for my students. I also wish to balance their literature by teaching a whimsical fantasy story followed by historical fiction; the sets of novels I am requesting meet that goal.

Success in life is dependent on literacy, and developing literacy is greatly aided by a passion for reading.

While I ideally would like to inspire my students to a point of reading for pleasure, I will be content if they are able to become strong, independent readers who only read for necessary information. Will you help me achieve this goal? Please say you will!
