My Students

Classrooms today are a diverse lot. Students come from different cultures and have different learning styles. I try to create a "user friendly" environment, one that allows my students to stay focused. Allowing a child to have the appropriate seat can change the way the child is able to learn.

My students are fifth and sixth grade special education students.

They have a wide range of disabilities, including, Learning Disabilities, Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Other Health Impairments. Many of the students have a difficult time sitting still and this impacts their ability to focus on reading and writing. This increases their struggle to grasp the learning targets being taught. My students are hard workers and want to succeed, but they grow frustrated as their lack of success.

My Project

Students learn better when they have a straight spine. Using balance balls helps to strengthen muscles, improve posture, promote flexibility and improve balance and coordination. It sends more blood and oxygen to the brain prompting focus and alertness. As they sit on the balance balls, they stimulate blood flow and create a situation for optimal learning. The balance balls and cushion seats absorb the students energy so that they are able to stay focused on the learning targets that are being taught.

I believe that by providing my students more accessibility to learning by allowing them a safe, comfortable seat, they will find increased success in their learning.

If students can divert their energy through a wiggle or bounce, their attention and focus will be there for them to grasp the concepts of the lesson being taught. Having a seat that lets them squirm and still learn creates the environment that my active and distracted students need to be able to focus and learn.
