My Students

"You must bring the artist into the world yourself." (Willa Cather) You have the power to touch the lives of future graphic designers, animators, web designers, and more. Many teachers ask students to put pen to paper, but we want to challenge them to put pen to computer.

In our rural yet suburban school setting, the Art and Technology teacher work together to provide all 1,000 students the opportunity to learn about how art and technology come together with three course options--Animation and Web Design, Digital Design I, and Digital Design II.

There is a high demand for enrollment in these courses with a waiting list. Many students choose to take all three courses. Our students obviously understand the demand for combining the use of art and technology in real world professions. Many of them aspire to work in the field and are anxious to learn more. As educators on a limited budget, we strive to provide the students with real-world tools and techniques.

My Project

"Technology, like art, is a soaring exercise of the human imagination." (Daniel Bell) We believe that acquiring digital tablets is another piece to the puzzle in preparing our students for careers in digital communications, interactive media and graphic design. In our courses students learn the fundamentals of art design and apply it utilizing technology tools including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well as Macromedia Flash, Fireworks and Dreamweaver. This software along with Intuos digital tablets is an industry standard for technological visual communications, but we currently only have one Intuos digital tablet for all students to share.

Providing our students with digital tablets will give them the "upperhand", self confidence, and experience needed when meshing their visual art and technology skills.

The student that once felt awkward drawing with a mouse will develop a natural sense of pen to computer with improved quality in their overall design.
