My Students

Have you wondered how diverse our city will be when your child is your age? How different it will be and how many languages will be spoken in everyday conversation? Our students need an appreciation for other cultures, and they should be prepared for a life of diversity.

My students are between 5 and 6 years old.

Most of my students are of the same background, but are very kind to everyone. They are outgoing and interested in factual information. They are free from prejudices of others and show an interest in learning about people. They enjoy hearing about myself, other parents, children, and teachers that come into our class. We are at a school that has a majority of Caucasian students. They see, talk, and play with kids that look similar to them. We are at a great school with great students, but is there enough multiculturalism being taught?

My Project

My students are around children that look like they do. They may be unaware of how different children their age can be. We teach a unit on North Carolina and the United States. I like doing this because it gives them an idea of where they are on a map and how big the outside world is. We have the opportunity to learn about different areas of our state and the United States. We also have a chance to learn about friends and family members that live in other parts of our country. I want to extend this into an Around the World unit. I want to show and teach my students where and how children live in other parts of the world. I want them to have an understanding of how other people live, what they look like, where they are located, what they do, etc.

Growing up as a student who was of a different ethnicity, I wonder how much more my teachers could have done to help me embrace my differences.

I want my students to not only feel comfortable and proud of who they are, but I want them to understand and accept people who are culturally different. Our lives are becoming more diverse as the years go on and we need to prepare our students for a future full of different races, beliefs, and backgrounds.
