Little Scientists: Explore, Discover, and Learn!

My students need hands-on manipulative science materials including a magnifier center, discovery tubes, and magnetic balls to enhance classroom instruction, for exploration during center time, and to further their curiosity.

My Students

My students are three years old and cannot grasp many concepts without hands-on activities with manipulatives. They need concrete objects to provide evidence that strengthens their learning experiences.

The students in this full-day early childhood learning center are identified "at-risk" by income, potential developmental delays, or other socio-economic factors.

All of the children in this center are 3 or 4 years old. Many of them qualify for services based solely on income level within the poverty range. With guidance and support, they catch up with their peers rather quickly, and they go off to Kindergarten ready to learn. For others, catching up is not so easy. Some of our students have identified developmental delays or other problems such as lingering effects from premature birth, drug-exposure (at birth or beyond), under-stimulating environment, orthopedically handicapped, and autism. Many of our students need hands-on manipulative materials which help get them active and eager to participate in classroom activities.

My Project

A firm foundation in basic skills is very important for continued success in school. These materials will help provide my students with opportunities for one-to-one counting, matching, color identification, and sorting activities; exposure to the life cycles of living things; step-by-step sequencing activities; exploration of cause and effect relationships; magnetic properties in action; and activities which build fine motor skills.

Donations to this project will help me engage my students in the process of learning.

Active participation (with manipulatives) is crucial for young children to establish a better understanding of the skills and concepts upon which they will build learning experiences in the future as they grow and move through school. These materials can help my students open the door to exploring, discovering, and learning through science.
