My Students

Algebra 1 is the most commonly failed high school course in the country. When taught through the use of technology it opens doors for students who previously had doors closed in their faces.

I teach inclusion algebra 1 which consists of regular ed.

students who have performed very poorly throughout middle school, and special ed. students with various learning disabilities. Within that group are the at-risk students who have backgrounds that have caused them to perform poorly in school in general. Due to forces beyond their control, they have not grown up with the same resources that others have. My co-teacher and I feel that we have to make up about 4 years of lost ground within one school year, and we are not giving up until we do.

My Project

Our at-risk students are the ones most negatively affected. They have so many gaps in their math backgrounds for various reasons, they struggle to see the value of learning algebraic concepts, and they lack the motivation that succeeding in algebra requires. A computer in our room for student use only would be so helpful because technology helps to make math more relatable. It allows us to teach them in different ways. It allows us to connect math with other subjects and ideas.

These kids have seen so many doors closed in their face, they already talk about seeing "street jobs" as their only option.

They are 14 years old and aren't able to see themselves having a positive future. Success in math, leads to success in other subjects, leads to a diploma, leads to a college application.....

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
