This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Any fifth grader can identify with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, but few of my students know these storied characters and even fewer know Mark Twain’s outsize role in American literature.

They've never heard how Tom tricks a company of boys into doing his chores, or how Huck chooses to defy society and save his friend Jim from slavery. Without knowing these tales or appreciating Twain's distinct style, my students are at a disadvantage both as readers and writers in middle school and beyond.

My Project

Putting my students on the same footing as their peers in more affluent neighborhoods and preparing them to succeed in college means they need to read these classics and understand Mark Twain's influence on most of the novels we read. With the books you provide, every student will have a copy of these two texts to begin the fall semester with a rigorous unit analyzing Twain's use of characters, plot and language.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are not "model boys" but they are model characters who motivate us as readers and inspire us as writers.

The fact that my students have never met them is just another way they begin the year at a disadvantage on the road to college. Fortunately, closing the gap begins with your simple act of putting these books in their hands. You make the introduction for my kids to meet Tom and Huck.
