My students need small instruments and accessories to perform in both band class and as a percussion ensemble.

My Students

Can you imagine where an amazing musician such as Yo-Yo Ma would be without the bow for is cello? My percussionists are forced to make do without many of the basic instruments and mallets required to play even the most basic of songs. We need your help to increase their possibilities.

The students I work with are all from very low income homes, but their parents manage to find a way to pay monthly instrument rental fees.

While they are learning the basics of how to play snare drum and bells, I am not currently able to teach them much about the rest of the percussion family. The school does not have the funding to provide the program with the proper instruments to play all of the written parts in our band music, let alone for me to start a percussion ensemble. Our school is one of the few non-magnet schools in the county. On top of this, our school is one of the very few to offer band at the middle school level. Being a part of the band gives them the opportunity to be part of a team. While in band the students have learned to set goals, work as a team, improve their self-discipline, listening skills, and of course a lot about music.

My Project

What I am asking of you is to help us by providing the students with items as small as triangle beaters and bass drum mallets to cymbals, wood blocks, and bass drum stands. It is my goal to assemble enough working percussion equipment to begin a percussion ensemble. Although most people think of lots of guys with drums strapped to them when they think about school bands, that is only one small part of life as a percussionist. Even a small donation will better equipment who might become some of the musicians you will hear on the radio in the future.

With your help, my students will learn that they not only provide the band with its heartbeat, but can make melodies of their own.

I hope to prove to them and to our future audiences that there is much more to percussion than banging on anything in sight.
