My Students

When you walk into a bookstore or library, does a book on display often catch your eye? I need to be able to display special books to make my students excited about reading!

I teach in a high poverty public elementary school in Washington State.

90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and I have many English language learners, whose families are learning to read along with their children.

My Project

I want my first graders to be excited about reading. Books that relate to topics we are learning in class are popular with students, and increase comprehension in other academic areas. I am requesting books about frogs, weather, butterflies, and seasons. I would also like to display books in a way that encourages children to pick them up and check them out. A small bookcase that can hold a variety of books throughout the year will do the trick!

When children love to read, they read more and they become better readers.

Quality books, interesting topics, and a welcoming display will encourage students to find that love of reading.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
