Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Surfing the Internet is the norm for most of us today. To my students, that is a luxury they cannot afford. With your help I would like to make this a reality for my class. I have a diverse class, my students are from a many nationalities, but one thing they have in common, is they all want to learn.

My school is located in a low income neighborhood,in the south Bronx,of New York.

The students in my school are entitled to free lunch and breakfast, because they are from a low socio-economic background. The population in my school is very diverse, it ranges from the largest population of Hispanic and African Americans to a small percent of Asian and others. The things we see as everyday necessities, are viewed as luxury through the eyes of my students. Despite the everyday challenges that my students face, they come in to school ready to soak up whatever there is for them to learn. These students are however limited, because they do not have access to the basic resources that stimulates learning. Resources such as, books, dictionary, thesaurus and basic writing tools.

My Project

Surfing the Internet is something we all do on a daily basic, in fact most of us cannot vision life without a computer. Well, for my students computers are a luxury. A luxury they cannot afford. I would like to give my students the world at their finger tips, and this I will be better able to do with computers in the classroom. My fifth grade students are required to do several research projects throughout the school year, however, they are limited because they do not have computers at home, and The schedule at the library is out of their control. With computers in the classroom these knowledge hungry students could do research, type and publish their work in a timely manner. They will be able to search the Internet for information relevant to different topics, they are required to study. They will learn how to use the typing tools, the Internet and they will also learn how to do powerpoint presentations.

My project is important because I would be able to introduce technology in the classroom.

We could visit sites that would give us interactive help with state test practices. We could visit sites that give us interactive games at our intellectual level. Most importantly we would be able to visit sites where we could interact with students on our grade level from different parts of the world. Having computers in the classroom will open many educational portals for my students.
