My Students

"You learn by doing", we have been told. Fifth graders get to learn about magnets and their properties. I need scientific magnet kits to give my students the opportunity to experiment with magnets and to see how they work by using them.

My students are fifth graders.

They are a mixture of many different cultures and races. They attend our Title 1 school and live in a low income area. Many of these students do not have access to books and computers in their homes. They have not had a lot of the experiences and exposure to things that most middle class kids have on a regular basis. Several of my students are second language learners with Spanish, Samoan, or Vietnamese spoken at home. They are great kids with a lot of potential."

My Project

The magnetic science kits include a variety of resources and activities to help students learn about magnets. The "hands-on" experiments will give them a chance to test the magnets and see what they can do. With these materials my students will be more likely to learn and remember the information because they will be actively involved in the learning process.

These science kits will help keep my students actively involved in learning about magnets.

Students will also be using higher level thinking skills as they create, test, and come up with explanations for the results they see. I believe that the most valuable teaching and learning happens when students get to use their hands to experiment and see results for themselves.
