Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What is the tangent of a 60 degree angle? ---- Calculate the hypotenuse of a triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem.

I teach in a public school in south Los Angeles.

Our students have few expendable resources and are often the first in their family to go to college. In addition, many students are the first to graduate High School!!!! Calculators are an essential part of a high school physics course and at many schools, they are part of the required materials to take the course. They are much like a $15 pencil and paper. However, for our student $15 is often more than they can spend on non-essential items such as food and clothing.

My Project

These calculators will allow access to vital components of a rigorous high school physics curriculum. Egg drops, bridge building, rocketry, and projectile motion are fun and engaging projects that introduce fundamental concepts of physics. However, then students take standardized tests and go on to college and are left behind because they never learned how to solve a problem using a calculator. These calculators will be issued to students to use for the entire semester so they have them in class and at home. They will then return them so future classes can benefit.

Fundamental math concepts are the core of two-dimensional motion in physics.

Although simple with the right tool, this would be impossible without a scientific calculator. Like driving a nail without a hammer!
